The Rev Dr Keith Vincent Garner is Superintendent/CEO of Wesley Mission, Sydney. Wesley Mission is one of Australia’s largest community service and caring organisations delivering more than 120 programs with almost 1,800 staff and 3,300 volunteers. It has been working within Sydney and NSW since 1812.
Wesley Mission Sydney is also the largest Uniting Church parish in Australia with more than 1,800 people worshipping at a variety of services each week.
Dr Garner is known for his strong sense of social justice and compassion. Since his appointment to Wesley Mission in 2005 he has built a strong reputation as a public advocate on such issues as homelessness, household debt and financial stress and the care of the mentally ill and vulnerable. He is a strong media contributor whose informed comments on social issues are sought regularly.
His weekly television program, Wesley Impact is shown nationally each week on the Nine Network and Praise, Prayer and Preaching program on the Australian Christian Channel.
In 2008 he participated in the Strengthening Communities, Supporting Families and Social Inclusion stream at the Australian Government’s 2020 Summit in Canberra. He has given evidence and made numerous submissions to government enquiries on issues ranging from suicide prevention to finance industry reform.
He currently serves as the Deputy Co-Chair of the NSW Premier’s Council on Homelessness. He is a member of the National Committee of UnitingCare Australia.
Before moving to Australia to take up his current role in 2005, Dr Garner had more than 25 years ministry experience including the leadership of some of Britain’s largest Methodist churches. He has had management and leadership responsibility of some of the Methodist Church’s largest community and caring services, and served on its highest councils and boards.
He is known as an inspiring and gifted preacher, having been invited to preach throughout the world – for example in Africa, Iceland, across Europe, the United States of America, the Far East, Burma and India. Keith is married to Carol and they became Australian citizens in 2009.
