Activity highlight
R U OK Day?
Held in November 2009
The event aimed to increase awareness in the community regarding suicide and related issues. It offered education to the public on practical ways to assist those in crisis and how to get help.
Steps involved
- Added to list of possible activities at Network meeting; ideas noted and plan of action determined.
- Volunteers recruited.
- Clarify Dates / Times / Venues.
- Venue permission sought and secured.
- Information packs developed and collated.
- Activity attended.
Community impact
The effects of the project are difficult to measure. During the actual activity however, there were mixed responses from the public ranging from little to no interaction with volunteers to those willing to take information packs provided. The effect on the Network was equally important with feedback providing constructive ideas on more effective ways to approach this type of public activity in the future. The activity also gave some insight and valuable knowledge about our specific community.
Get involved
The network welcomes all assistance. New members help us continue our community activities and develop new ideas. Assistance can be provided in a range of forms including:
- becoming an event or activity volunteers
- becoming a representative for your own community services network and sharing community information
- funding and formal sponsorship.
The Network is a not-for-profit organisation with all funds received redirected into suicide prevention strategies including:
- open education courses in suicide prevention
- production and distribution of vital help information
- building community awareness and reducing stigma associated with suicide
The future plans of the Network have identified a need for increased funding where these activities can continue yearly and other activities such as a support group and possible crisis/response service.
If you have any questions or offers of assistance, please contact the Network on the details below.
