Moving words mark Newcastle’s Memorial Day
Over 100 people from the Hunter who have experienced loss of a loved one to suicide came together at the Wesley LifeForce Suicide Memorial Day Newcastle 2011 on October 27.
The rain held off as everyone listened to the personal stories from Bellinda Fenwick and Leigh Laverty who have both lost a family member to suicide. They spoke of their need to interact with others who are bereaved of loved ones.
The Rev Dr Keith V Garner talked of how, in the face of adversity, we do not need answers but understanding of those around us.
The service included the traditional Sunflower Ceremony led by Kate Munro, Lifeline Newcastle and Hunter, and was concluded with a prayer from the Rev Peter Pereira. Doves were released to close the ceremony. Local singer and songwriter, Matt Purcell, provided poignant and moving music for the event. Afternoon tea, fellowship, and mutual support followed the event.
Wesley LifeForce Manager, Tony Cassidy, said he has received great feedback on the event and is looking forward to continuing it in the future.
“It was good to see friends come together and bravely share their experiences,” he said.
