Peter’s triumph over alcohol addiction

Peter McAleer, a former horse breaker, began drinking dangerously in his 20s but didn’t reach out for help until he was 43. Peter recalls how he kept a bottle of booze by his bed the way others would keep a bottle of water, and would drink from morning till night.

When he did reach out for help it was to the staff working within the drug and alcohol program at Wesley Mission Hospital - Ashfield.

“I feel I have something to offer now,” says Peter, who is now training to become as an Assistant in Nursing to help others through the program.

“I want to let other addicts know that there is a choice.”

According to therapist Carol Nedov, Peter is “incredible”. “His story is full of hope.”
