'I was desperate enough to call a stranger.'
"The call was Jennifer's* last resort. Sadly, 1 in 3 crisis calls cannot be answered."
Can you imagine the feelings of isolation and despair that could make you phone a stranger?
We all feel lonely and sad sometimes. If you are lucky, you have friends and family that you can turn to in times of crisis. Jennifer felt utterly alone.
Jennifer phoned Wesley Mission's Lifeline in desperation three years ago.
"I phoned Lifeline Sydney
after a suicide attempt. It wasn't the first time I had tried and if it wasn't for that call, it may not have been the last.
"Things were really falling apart and I felt no one understood me and no one cared. My life was very painful and I had no idea how to deal with it."
She didn't know what to expect but needed to tell someone, anyone, what she had done. Jennifer is sure that it was such a call, her last resort, which saved her life…
Because of support from concerned people like you, a trained volunteer counsellor was on hand to answer Jennifer's urgent call. The service is confidential, so people in crisis feel safe to open up. They can express themselves without fear of being judged or rejected.
Wesley Mission's Lifeline Sydney helped Jennifer to regain her strength: to keep on living and take control of her life.
Lifeline Sydney and Sutherland receive around 24,000 calls each year from desperate people, just like Jennifer.
But our 24-hr counselling service cannot survive without calling on you for financial support. Right now, 1 in 3 calls cannot be answered.
