How important is my Will?
Your Will is a legal document which allows you to choose who will receive your assets and belongings when you die. If you don’t have a Will your estate will be distributed according to legislation. This can be costly and can also cause unnecessary problems and anxiety for your loved ones. For your own peace of mind, and for the sake of those close to you, we recommend that you have an up-to-date Will which reflects your current financial situation.
What is a bequest?
A bequest is a specific gift of assets or belongings to a particular person or organisation through your Will. There are three major types of bequests:
- a specific bequest is a gift of a particular piece of property such as a house, furniture or jewellery
- a general bequest is usually a sum of money or a percentage of the value of your estate
- a residual bequest includes anything remaining in your estate after the specific and general bequests have been paid
How should I word a bequest to Wesley Mission?
We suggest that you use the following wording:
"I give ..... to the Wesley Mission (Sydney) for the general purposes thereof."
Should you wish to direct the gift to a special area of Wesley Mission, we recommend:
I give ….. to the Wesley Mission (Sydney) for the specific purpose of ….." (for example, "Wesley Dalmar" or "its caring services for the aged").
We also recommend that you include:
"..... and the receipt executed by the Uniting Church in Australia Property Trust (N.S.W.) in accordance with section 26 of the Uniting Church in Australia Act 1977 provided by the Mission shall be sufficient discharge of my Trustee and my Trustee shall not be bound to see the application of the said gift."
What Wesley Mission does
The oldest church-based charity in Australia, Wesley Mission has been caring for people in need since 1812. We believe it takes a lot of love, faith, and commitment to engage in the lives of the lost and lonely. Our work is as diverse as the needs we face, so we shape our programs, church services, activities and people to support those in need effectively – wherever they are.
Wesley Mission offers Christian care and compassion to the homeless, the elderly, children and families in crisis, recovering addicts, the unemployed, the mentally ill, the intellectually and physically disabled, those in need of counselling, and many more.
