Easter Breakfast

The real debate on power
Influential figures from government and the business world were among the audience at Wesley Mission’s 2011 Easter breakfast. Former Prime Minister John Howard and opposition spokesman on immigration, Scott Morrison, joined almost 200 guests at the Wesley Centre.
The Rev Dr Keith V Garner talked about the responsibilities and demands of power. “The most positive exercise of power is to reach out to those who have little,” he said.
“It is time to take stock and assess our own priorities and not identify the poor and powerless as the focus of our blame”. With this Keith Garner returned to the theme of disadvantage amid Australia’s wealth and the growing divisions between rich and poor in Australia.
“Our plasma TV prosperity and popular fixation with home ownership can mask deeper and more profound issues of personal fear, insecurity and stress which feed our perceptions of the disadvantaged,” he said.
“As we approach Easter, we all have a responsibility to ensure our thinking about, our interactions with, and our response to power is in some way related to what we see in Jesus Christ.”
Dr Garner also interviewed social entrepreneur, David Bussau about his business career, philanthropy and journey of faith in Jesus Christ.
