Good Friday
The Way of the Cross Procession
Friday 2 April 2.00pm
Free Event
Pitt Street was empty for the Good Friday holiday until the procession turned onto the street from Martin Place. The scene filled quickly with Jesus, the cross, Roman soldiers, weeping women, worshippers, the curious, and the media. There were people shouting abuse at Jesus and there was the muted murmur of the crowd. Carved faces on the walls of the GPO looked down to see the blood stained Jesus lugging the heavy cross.
The actors in the procession brought into view this painful part of the Easter narrative with Jesus being beaten and mocked. Passers-by looked on, questioning.
This was the Jesus story in the public domain, amid the jostling crowd and in front of the cold eye of the camera. A snapshot of Jesus betrayed held in the streetscape. It was that key moment before hope to be experienced by people in the street.
The procession passed the construction work in Pitt Street Mall with the crowd walking around the Bobcats and chain link fences. The crowd came finally to the doors of Wesley Mission where the procession morphed into a play by the Wesley Institute actors and Rev Dr Keith Garner spoke on the meaning of Easter.
Easter Performance - But for One Man
Friday 2 April 2.30 pm
Wesley Theatre
Free Event
After the Good Friday Way of the Cross Procession, students from the Wesley Institute performed But for One Man. Through drama, dance, film and music, But for One Man followed a group of actors as they rehearsed for an Easter play and wrestled with the truth and reality of Jesus.
The play linked today with two thousand years ago, recognising that so many people of the world are spiritually lost and directionless. It told the story of a child born, by his Father’s intent, to be the One Man to bridge the fractured relationship between humanity and the Divine.
One Man who did it, for each "one man" of the world, you and I.
