Wesley E-Recycling team environmental superheroes
22 December 2008
The team at Wesley E-Recycling were announced as the overall NSW state winner for the 2008 Telstra Environment Award, beating thousands of entries to take top honour.
The award and a cheque for $5000 were presented by the General Manager of Telstra to the Wesley E-Recycling team during the Channel 10 weather forecast with Tim Bailey on Wednesday 16th December 2008.
Wesley E-Recycling was selected as the overall winner for the work they are doing within the community to protect and save the environment from e-waste by reducing, reusing and recycling!
The Wesley E-Recycling program provides meaningful employment and training opportunities for people with disabilities so they can be actively involved with the community, in technology and environmental sustainability.
The program was developed to address the following needs:
1. To create interesting and diverse supported employment opportunities for people with disabilities
2. To prevent hazardous waste from going to landfill or shipped offshore to poorly regulated developing nations to dispose
3. To bridge the digital divide - provide low cost technology for those within the community who otherwise couldn’t afford to participate in the digital age
By addressing the growing e-waste problem, Wesley E-Recycling has empowered an eager workforce to use their skills to contribute to society in a tangible way by providing an environmental solution that enables organisations and individuals to reduce their carbon footprint.
