Wesley Mission 'forced to turn away homeless families'

05 March 2009

Wesley Mission is having to turn away families every week who are desperate for short-term accommodation.

An extra 7,500 people in New South Wales were made homeless last year, at time when interest rates and rents were soaring.

Superintendent Reverend Keith Garner says it is becoming an acute problem.
"In Sydney alone we're turning around as many as 10 families a week from one of our short-term accommodation centres," he said. Reverend Garner says Wesley Mission has been overwhelmed by the problem.

The Government says the federal stimulus package will enable it to build more social housing, but it acknowledges any relief is still some way off.
