Support for Newcastle youth work
26 February 2010
Hunter Region mining company Xstrata Coal NSW will provide Wesley Mission with $60,000 a year for the next three years to assist its work with youth in Newcastle and the Hunter.
Wesley Mission was announced as one of several Xstrata Coal Corporate Social Involvement Partners at an event in Newcastle on February 25.
The funding begins in March and will be directed to the Youth Harm Minimisation Outreach Initiative. The program aims to address the increasing needs of young people in crisis by providing easy access to information, education, intensive support and counselling related to homelessness, alcohol and other drug abuse, mental health and family breakdown.
The funding will allow Wesley Mission to employ a part-time outreach youth worker/ counsellor.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for Wesley Mission to offer support to young people who don’t normally have access to mainstream services,” Michael Wright, Coordinator, Newcastle Youth Services, said.
