No respite from ridicule
Nicholas is in Year 6 and has just turned 12 years of age. He can’t remember a time in his primary school years when he wasn’t bullied. He is still bullied every day – mostly because of how he looks. Nicholas is by no means alone.
Schools are filled with kids who are teased for being too tall, too short, too thin, too fat, or any other outstanding feature their specific gene pool happens to fling their way.
For Nicholas, who is in foster-care through Wesley Mission, the bullying began as young as kindergarten.
“In kindergarten I just thought they were joking around but since I’ve gotten older I’ve realised they’re not joking around; they’re being serious about it,” he said.
“I used to think, ‘I don’t understand why they’re bullying me. What is it about me?’ ”
