Doing ‘all the good we can, in all the ways we can’ extends to our planet. Wesley Mission’s new ‘wholeness approach’ means improving our impact on the environment.
As a result, we are currently developing an environmental measurement system to gather information on the effect our work has on the environment. Many of our centres, however, have already been considering the effect they have on the environment. Initiatives in place include:
- Recycling of cardboard, paper, plastics, drink cans, toner cartridges
- Documents available electronically, rather than paper copies
- Water saving devices
- Gas heating, rather than electric
- Energy efficient lighting
Cars that fuel a cleaner future
We’ve added a hybrid electric / fuel car to the range of cars available on Wesley Mission’s company car list. These cars use about half the petrol of a conventional vehicle. This has both a financial benefit, by reducing petrol costs, and an environmental benefit, by reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
In addition, in some areas, such as Wesley Rehabilitation Services, we’ve replaced large vehicles with smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles.
Growing children’s appreciation of the environment
Contributing to a sustainable environment is paramount at Wesley Mission’s camping and conference facilities at Vision Valley and Mangrove Mountain Retreat.
The camping and conference facilities have recently begun an environmental education program for local schools, called The Environmental Journey. The program is designed to demonstrate to young people how easy it is to care for the planet and save money along the way.
The facilities also have new era features like these:
- Commercial worm farms, where food waste is recycled, reducing waste removal costs (by about $5,000 per year). This produces nutrient-rich organic matter for camp gardens.
- Water restrictors on all showers and hand basins and dual flush toilets
- Waste water recycled onto paddocks, reducing horse feed costs
- Energy efficient lighting and gas water heating
Recycling computers – filling lives
instead of adding to landfill Wesley Mission’s IT Department recycles old computer equipment through the Work for the Dole program, reducing landfill.
This year, Wesley Uniting Employment’s Work for the Dole team rebuilt and despatched a container full of computer equipment for use by poor Indian villagers in the state of Bangalore – including 326 monitors, 210 PCs, 300 keyboards, 20 printers and other equipment.
These examples represent a beginning, but they also mark Wesley Mission’s commitment to a sustainable future.
