Wesley Mission is Australia's largest Christian complex

Our people

The diversity of Wesley Mission’s services is matched only by the diversity of our people. Yet we are united in diversity by the same cohesive vision, set of values and motivation to care for people through love, faith and commitment.

This is a breakdown of the people who help care and provide services.

Social Indicators

Total number of employees (LA1)

Total no of employees

NB. Employee numbers reported here were calculated by looking at the number of employees on a single day. In past annual reports, the number of employees reported reflected the total number of employees working at Wesley Mission throughout the year. The current method is considered to provide a more accurate representation of the number of employees at Wesley Mission at any one time.

Staff Retention and Satisfaction (LA2)

Staff Retention and Satisfaction (LA2)

Employee turnover rate in 2005/06 was 30.0%. Wesley Mission is currently investigating ways to improve long-term staff satisfaction and staff retention.

This year we conducted a staff satisfaction survey with our Aged Care staff. Eighty five percent of Aged Care staff reported feeling a sense of loyalty and commitment to Wesley Mission. The vast majority also believe that Wesley Mission delivers high quality care and services (80%) and that Wesley Mission makes a successful impact on the community (88%).

One area which was identified as needing improvement was rewarding and recognising staff. We acknowledge this issue and are currently developing a Staff Recognition Program.

Due to the success of the survey with Aged Care staff, all Wesley
Mission employees will now complete the survey.

Volunteer Profile

  • 3,400 volunteers worked 160,977 hours (equivalent of 88
    full-time employees)
  • 7 different companies worked in 583 groups giving 2,829 hours.
  • The efforts of Wesley Mission volunteers saved the Mission
approximately $5.1 million* in wages in 2005/06.

Mangrove Mountain Retreat – Corporate and Rover Scout volunteers upgraded the lodge. This effort saved the camp site more than $15,000 and will provide future campers with appealing and comfortable lodgings.

Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) (LA5 and LA7)

Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) (LA5 and LA7)

We are committed to ensuring the health, safety and welfare of our employees, volunteers, visitors and others at our workplaces. We have recently undertaken an educational campaign to encourage employees to report incidents, as the reporting process enables us to understand and control risks to our employees. The increase in the number of workplace injuries since 2003/04 reflects an increase in reporting, rather than an increase in injuries

Wesley Mission also implemented a strategy to control Workers Compensation risks. Workers Compensation claims were reduced by 42% and the number of working days lost by 45.7% at 31 March 2006 over 2003/04 financial year. This resulted in premium costs being maintained at 2003/04 levels while employee numbers increased by 34%. The costs of Workers Compensation claims as at March 2006 show a 37.3% reduction over 2003/04

Staff Training (LA9)

Staff Training (LA9)

NB – data from a three month period was aggregated to get this
12 month estimate.

Staff training needs are identified annually as part of the Personal
Review and Development Program, where learning options are
discussed.

Wesley offers internal training in a wide variety of areas, including:

  • Anti Discrimination, Harassment, Bullying and the Grievance
    Procedure.
  • Safe driver awareness
  • Using computer applications (eg. Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • OH&S (eg. First aid, workers compensation, injury
    management)
  • Managing stress
  • Orientation for new and long serving employees
  • Recruitment, selection, induction, exit

Wesley Mission considers it of the utmost importance that staff are properly equipped to perform their roles and training is undertaken where necessary to improve staff skill levels. Wesley Mission has an Educational Assistance Plan in place, where financial assistance or study leave can be granted to assist an employee with upgrading their skills. In 2005/06 18 employees accessed Educational Assistance. There is considerable uptake of external training in the form of workshops and conferences, for example, but complete data is not yet available.

Employee Support (LA12)

Employee Support (LA12)

Employee Support Program

All Wesley Mission employees can access the Employee Support Program, a confidential support service providing immediate and professional support to employees who are experiencing challenges as a result of a traumatic incident or personal issue. The number of staff accessing support increased this year, as a result of increased information provided to staff about the service.

Salary Packaging

Salary Packaging enables Wesley Mission to offer a range of fringe benefits to its employees. Salary packaging means that an employees’ total remuneration package may consist of a cash component (taxable salary), a packaged amount to be spent on payments deemed eligible by the Australian Tax Office, salary sacrifice superannuation contributions and possibly a vehicle.

At the end of this year 556 employees, over half of the 996 eligible, had taken up salary packaging.
