Annual Report 2007

Wesley Mission is Australia's largest Christian complex

Business Support Network

Human Resources

Number of Staff:  22
Number of Locations: 2
Number of Volunteers: 34

Key performance highlights and issues:

  • Following the introduction of the Federal Government’s new WorkChoices legislation effective from March 2006, the Human Resources Group investigated its applicability to Wesley Mission.  Advice received from Employers First and their legal counsel indicated that Wesley Mission is not a constitutional corporation and therefore WorkChoices does not apply.  However, Wesley Institute is deemed by definition to be a constitutional corporation and therefore this legislation does apply.
  • The Mission has met its initial obligations under this legislation and has implemented strategies to meet its ongoing requirements.
  • The Voice staff satisfaction survey was conducted across Wesley Mission, after being piloted in Aged Care.  The response rate was 48%.
  • The survey results have been presented to Management Committee and are currently being communicated to staff.  Strategies to address identified areas for improvement are being developed.
  • The Superintendent announced new Values for Wesley Mission in October 2006.  The Human Resources Group, in consultation with the Business Support Network, has facilitated the development of a transitional process to support the introduction of these new Values, and this includes their inclusion in the Employee Handbook.
  • The Superintendent announced the Mission’s new organisational structure in May 2007.  The Human Resources Group, in consultation with the transitional team, is implementing strategies to incorporate this structure into the life of the Mission.
  • Through the growing relationship between the Commonwealth Bank, our Volunteers team and Community Relations Department, two major achievements have led to substantial savings for the Mission:
    * The Commonwealth Bank is developing a values-based Leadership training program which will assist in embedding the Mission’s new Values across the organisation;
    * In 2006, 270 volunteers from the Commonwealth Bank painted the walls and ceilings in the living quarters of Edward Eagar Lodge, and also generously donated $2,970.
Goals for next reporting year:
  • Implement identified strategies to reflect the Mission’s new Values, organisational structure and Voice Survey results into the life of Wesley Mission.  This will include reviewing our Human Resources policies and practices (including our Performance Review and Development Program).
  • Implement strategies to meet ongoing requirements and respond to any legislative changes in the WorkChoices legislation brought about by the Federal election outcome.
  • Identify the most appropriate Payroll and Human Resources software systems to replace the PeopleSoft application, to meet our changing business requirements and manage the risks associated with the future withdrawal of vendor support for PeopleSoft.
