Beyond Adversity: giving kids a chance to shine
At Wesley Mission, we see the human cost of childhood adversity: our counsellors and care workers engage daily with homelessness, suicide, addiction, mental illness, dysfunctional young people, and children taken into foster care. Many of these problems are caused by abuse, neglect or dysfunction in childhood.
What are the factors that help children who are facing adversity build their resilience and bounce back after trauma?
Wesley Mission’s research has found that there are three key areas that communities urgently need to address and strengthen, to improve the situation for children in Australia:
- Schooling and education
- Mentoring
- Early intervention
On 19th November, 2007, Rev Keith Garner, CEO/Superintendent of Wesley Mission, shared the research findings of the third Wesley Report: Beyond adversity: giving kids a chance to shine.
The report revealed one of Australia’s most hidden social issues.
A panel of acknowledged leaders in the field of childhood development discussed the Report’s recommendations.
