Give kids a chance: Seeing a better future with mentoring

Our research

In the 2009 Wesley report, Give kids a chance: No-one deserves to be left out, we looked into the effects that bullying has on children and how this affects their development into adult life. Our current report, Give kids a chance: Seeing a better future with mentoring looks at teenage development and focuses on the role that adults play as mentors. As part of the research for this report, we spoke to both mentors and mentees on the importance of mentoring in their lives and how overwhelmingly brighter the future looks for a young person who can say that they have someone who is their mentor.

Key findings

  • many young people lack direction and have no clear goals for the future
  • many young people want more adult support and guidance
  • most young people have heard of mentoring, but few have had direct experience
  • young people believe in the benefits of mentoring
  • mentoring helps young people gain clarity about their career goals and plans
  • mentoring has a deep impact on the lives of young people

Implications for policy

Give kids a chance: Seeing a better future with mentoring makes a number of recommendations for action. These include raising awareness of mentoring for disadvantaged kids, the expansion of programs to support attainment, augmenting of community networks and the strengthening of existing approaches.
