Accessible Information Kit
Wesley Mission has developed a range of tools and resources, which enable
people with a Developmental Disability, Families and staff to understand the
policies and procedures of the organisation and their rights in relation to
the service they receive.
The components of the Accessible Information Kit are;
- Easy English written policy and procedure manual (booklet)
This booklet is drawn from the complex English policy and procedure
manual currently in use across Wesley Disability Support Services.
Information in the Easy English manual focuses in a concrete and person
centred manner on the way in which Wesley provides service and support to
people. Information about the rights of people with disabilities is included in this
booklet, as the underpinning concept of the policies that guide Wesley
Disability Support Services. Illustrations accompany written text, in order
to provide a visually interesting and varied document. This format will be
most suitable for people who have some reading ability. It will also provide
family members and staff with easy access to the critical policy information
about each service.
Wesley intends to translate this booklet into community languages in the
future including Italian, Greek, Arabic and Cantonese so as to increase the
accessibility of the information to people from culturally diverse
backgrounds.
- Pictorial English information booklet about rights and policies and
procedures (booklet)
This booklet is aimed at people who do not read. It contains simplified
versions of the information contained in the easy English manual and relies
primarily upon illustrations to make clear statements about the service
provision and how the service respects the rights of each person. This
resource is intended to be used as part of a learning strategy, rather than
as a ‘read alone’ document.
- Easy English Audio
The audio format of the easy English manual will be suitable for people
who have vision impairment and also as an accompaniment in reading the
written manual for people who are not confident in independent reading. The
cover of the tape is titled in Braille for easy recognition by people with
vision impairment.
- DVD - Your Service & Your Rights
Language options on the DVD include Italian, Greek, Arabic, Cantonese and
Auslan interpreting.
This DVD is targeted to people who have significant support needs. It
addresses Wesley policy statements, mission and vision and brings to life
the connection between people’s rights and service policy. The DVD provides
information about the different types of services that are provided through
Dalmar Disability Support Services and Wesley Business Services.
- Interactive Games – included as an option on DVD menu
The interactive games on the DVD enable people to discover information
about specific policies and procedures as well as information about their
rights as service users at Wesley. This is an exciting and dynamic way to
encourage people with intellectual disability to find out information about
their rights and their service through engaging activities.
- Training Package
This training curriculum is targeted to Dalmar Disability Services staff.
The training package contains implementation guidelines and strategies for
the creative use of each of the resources. The training package addresses
how to best utilise the Accessible Information Kit to teach people about
their rights and the way that the services operate to ensure their rights
are upheld.
