Community Housing

When clients move on from Edward Eagar Lodge into the community, many of them do not cope with the pressures of life. In order to assist these people the concept of Community Housing was developed. Three or four of our clients live together in the community, with support. This enables them to progress toward independent living at their own pace.

Our first community house was established at The Rocks in 1982. This concept was expanded in the early 1990’s when we obtained further community houses with the assistance of government funding.

The Community Housing Program aims to provide a range of medium-term accommodation options as the next step on from hostel accommodation. This allows clients — both men and women — to progress towards independent living with dignity, privacy and security and self-worth.

Support workers are employed to help clients develop a Personal Futures Plan and facilitate the achievement of life goals and ambitions. They also assist clients to access generic services and exercise free choice and personal rights, thus developing a personal social network, in order that they can live more effectively independent and stable lives in the community.

The number of houses and units within the community continues to grow. At present we approximately have accommodation for 130 people in 24 different houses or units across 24 suburbs.
