Alcohol and other drugs service
Wesley Hospital Ashfield has launched a new service aimed at helping people addicted to alcohol and other drugs overcome their addictions for life.
The Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) service offers an acute phase of therapy which includes psycho-education, family therapy, life skills therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic therapy.
The service also draws on the multidisciplinary skills of Wesley Hospital’s psychologists, dieticians, exercise therapist, art therapist and financial and gambling counsellors.
Ongoing support is given to patients on completion of the program by offering easy access to day patient programs fostering links with Alcoholics Anonymous, vocational rehabilitation and long-term residential rehabilitation.
This new service will be led by Dr Oliver O'Connell as Director and Mark Stevens as Therapy Co-ordinator. Dr O’Connell has more than 12 years experience in the field of addiction treatment with the Northside Group
He is passionate about giving patients the best possible chance of overcoming their addiction and restoring a sense of purpose in their life.
Dr O’Connell is a Fellow of both the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Chapter of Addiction Medicine.
Mark Stevens brings to the service his experience of working as the Drug and Alcohol Day Services Co-ordinator and Mental Health Worker for Northside Clinic’s Outpatient Drug and Alcohol Program.
