Post-treatment support for eating disorders

Following treatment for an eating disorder at Wesley Eating Disorders Centre, it is important to consolidate the gains you have made by calling on the assistance of professionals who will continue to care for you. These professionals may include your:

  • general practitioner
  • dietician
  • psychologist
  • psychiatrist
  • counsellor.

If required, the team at the Wesley Eating Disorders Centre can help organise post-discharge follow-up with professionals who specialise in eating disorders.

Steps to recovery from an eating disorder

In the post-treatment phase it is also worth considering the following questions:

  • Are you using your support network as well as you might?
  • Is your current living situation a barrier to your recovery?
  • Would a decrease in your roles and responsibilities help with recovery?
  • Do you need more structure in your week to help distract yourself from the thoughts and urges surrounding your eating disorder?
  • How will you reintegrate from the day patient program into everyday living?

If you have an eating disorder, it is not uncommon to have other psychiatric illnesses such as depression, anxiety or a drug or alcohol dependence. If appropriate, you will be given the opportunity to be referred to a program that specialises in the treatment of these illnesses.
