Become a telephone counsellor
Lifeline Sydney & Sutherland provides a crisis and support telephone service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The centre is owned and operated by Wesley Mission and is one of 42 centres accredited by Lifeline Australia.
The service wouldn’t exist without our committed team of volunteer telephone counsellors, and we’re currently looking for new counsellors to join our passionate and dedicated team.
Being a Lifeline telephone counsellor is really all about one person caring for another by telephone.
Our counsellors undertake a comprehensive, highly regarded training program that prepares them for their work with Lifeline. They are trained to listen well and to help in emergency situations. Callers are able to talk about their hurts and fears and we help them find solutions to their problems.
Becoming a volunteer telephone counsellor is extremely rewarding – you’ll make a difference in the lives of many people. You’ll also develop your communication skills and learn a great deal about relating to people in need.
If you are over 21 and a mature person who can listen and respond warmly to the concerns of others, we’d love to hear from you.
Lifeline volunteer telephone counsellors come from all walks of life, communities and cultures and are of all ages. They respect the values of Wesley Mission. No previous training or counselling experience is required – just the desire to give back to your community and to be there for someone in need.
