Governor praises Wesley Fair
The Governor reflected on the evolving purpose of each fair, noting that last year it had raised funds for the Northmead Children’s Hospital Respite Centre.
"As a doctor who worked for many years with children," she said, "it was wonderful to have a respite centre for children who suffer from chronic illnesses."
"This year's cause literally brought tears to my eyes when I read about it," the Governor said, referring to the FurnACHA Shack, the program to provide basic household items for needy aged people who are moving into assisted housing. Every dollar raised at the fair will go towards setting up FurnACHA.
"This is a most noble cause, and absolutely essential," Dr Bashir said. We must never, ever forget our elders in need. To reach their twilight years and not have anywhere to call home is a dreadful thing.
"In a short time we will be old ourselves," she reminded the eager crowd of Mission supporters gathered for the opening of Wesley Fair. "Please spend generously and have lots and lots of fun!"
All money raised through the fair will go towards establishing the FurnACHA Shack and purchasing basic household items such as sheets, pillows, fridges and whitegoods.
After cutting the white ribbon across the entrance to the Wesley Centre, the Governor was escorted inside by the Superintendent, Rev Keith Garner, his wife, Carol. and the Fair Manager, Bob Sharpe.
Dr Bashir admired the refurbished foyer and the Wesley Mission "history wall", with exhibits such as a chair used by John Wesley.
She then visited the various stalls at the fair, chatting with Mission supporters and learning about the Mission's work.
