Pastoral Services

Graham Want, Pastoral Services Group Manager

The church was brought into being to carry on our Lord’s ministry in this world — to follow his example and perpetuate what he did in our communities.

We at Wesley Mission proclaim the Gospel, worship God, edify the body of Christ and care for others because Jesus did and because He wants us to.

Congregations

Wesley Mission held almost 3,000 services last yearStrong worship services are the powerhouse of the church, and Wesley Mission conducts 12 weekly services in five languages at the Wesley Centre in the Sydney CBD, as well as over 38 other services at centres caring for the aged, the homeless, the disabled and others needing care. Service and worship are bound together.

Each service provides a different emphasis for varying spiritual needs. Services are held in different languages to reach people from many cultures, and at different times to make worship available for everyone. The congregations include people from all walks of life.

Bible study groups meet regularly and counselling is available. Pastoral Services provides food, cash and referrals to the needy, and Christmas hampers and toys for the poor. The Dunbar Library is a valuable resource for congregational members.

Some relate especially to children in our care while others minister in retirement villages. One chaplain ministers to those struggling with mental illnesses. All have special pastoral functions in caring for the dying and the bereaved.

Chaplains minister to the Mission’s centres for employment, for the disabled, homeless people, in nursing homes, broken families needing support, home care services, and in School for Seniors.

This year saw the retirement of The Rev. Noreen Towers who for 40 years served as chaplain for the homeless at Edward Eagar Lodge and other Wesley centres. In 2004 the highly-respected Rev. Towers, who was Manager of Wesley Mission’s Homeless Persons’ Services, received an Order of Australia award.
