Superintendent’s Report

Gordon Moyes at the Sydney Opera House‘Underlying all of our activities have been the Word of God and the work of God. The proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ goes hand-in-hand with our ministries of mercy and compassion…’

During the past 25 years Wesley Mission’s Annual Reports have documented our continuous and record growth, rarely surpassed by any church, charity or business. I am pleased to announce that my 27th and final Annual Report follows that remarkable tradition.

It has also been a year of great financial success underlined by a pattern of expansion that has realised a doubling of our income every five years. We are now ranked among the nation’s Top 500 businesses with an initial position of 275.

For the first time we have over 4,000 employees — a record for any church or charity in the world. Over 3,000 of these undertook funded training during the year. More than 3,300 dedicated volunteers sustain our activities.

We thank God for the record income we have received from our wills and bequests which will provide the bedrock of our work for the next three years. There are challenges ahead, like major new building developments and programs, which we can approach with confidence given the high level of interest from prospective residents.

Underlying all of our activities have been two tenets: the Word of God and the work of God. The proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ goes hand-in-hand with our ministries of mercy and compassion to the powerless, the homeless, the poor, the mentally ill, the disabled, the unemployed, struggling families and those who are spiritually hungry. This Annual Report provides us with a snap shot of how Wesley Mission has helped such people and hundreds of thousands of others just like them.

Gordon Moyes

Like John Wesley, who declared that “the world is my parish”, Wesley Mission has more than 100 members serving in 12 countries. These people have realised the building of an orphanage, Bible College, care centres and ministries among some of the world’s poorest communities in Africa, India, Sri Lanka, South East Asia, China and South America. By our television, radio, film and video, and internet programs, we have reached millions of people around the globe for and with the Gospel.

Wesley Mission is highly grateful for our partnerships of support with Commonwealth and State Government Departments, corporations, clubs, community groups, donors, members and other stakeholders.

My successor, the Rev Keith Garner and his wife Carol are already in residence, and are undertaking orientation with me. I am sure you will extend them the same support and loyalty you have given to me and my family.

Beverley, my four children and I extend our thanks to all who have shared in our service to the church, the community and the nation during our time at Wesley Mission. At the end of 2005 I will retire from 49 active years of ministry, the last 27 years as Superintendent of Wesley Mission. I will continue my involvement in a number of community enterprises and as a Member of Parliament until the conclusion of my elected term in 2011.

God bless you.

The Rev. the Hon. Dr. Gordon Moyes, AC, MLC
