Wesley Mission joins Sydney-wide action on global warming
20 March 2007
On Saturday, 31 March Wesley Mission will take part in Earth Hour by turning off all lights for one hour at their Head Office building, 220 Pitt St, Sydney.
Other Wesley Mission centres across the greater Sydney metropolitan region are being encouraged to participate in Earth Hour in the same way.
An initiative of WWF-Australia and The Sydney Morning Herald, Earth Hour calls on all of Sydney to turn off lights for one hour between 7:30pm and 8:30pm on 31 March, 2007.
The City of Sydney is fully committed to the event; both the Harbour Bridge and Opera House will have all non-essential lights switched off for the hour. Many other businesses will also join the event.
The aim of Earth Hour is to highlight the threat of climate change to life on earth and to show that small adjustments in how we live can help to slow the current rate of global warming.
“Participating in Earth Hour is the first step in our ongoing commitment to reducing Wesley Mission’s environmental footprint,” said Wesley Mission Superintendent, the Rev Keith Garner. “It is an opportunity for us to be part of a united symbolic gesture demonstrating our desire to care for God’s creation."
“The consequences of human-induced climate change are significant and it will be, as always, the poor that will be hit hardest."
“Taking part in Earth Hour is the beginning of Wesley Mission’s journey toward a longer term, organisation-wide goal; the effective implementation of environmental strategies to reduce and manage waste in water, fuel, electricity, paper and chemicals across all of Wesley Mission by 2010.”
