Chrisco's warehouse of wonders for disadvantaged families

20 March 2007

HAMPER giant Chrisco turned out its Auburn warehouse on Tuesday, 20 March for homeless families and intellectually disabled people being cared for by Wesley Mission in Auburn and greater Sydney.

The gift, worth over $50,000, came through some divine detective work by Senior Constables Peter Nicolle and Phil Gagliano of Auburn Police who inquired into charities working in the area and nominated Wesley Mission as one worthy of support.

The 1500-2000 brand-new items donated by Chrisco include hundreds of toys as well as bedding, electrical goods including surround sound systems and DVD players, kitchen equipment – even a lawn mower – and will be distributed among Wesley Mission shelters and offices.

The bounty is welcomed by Mission staff who, like all charity bodies, have limited resources to share among those in care. In Auburn, Wesley Mission runs crisis accommodation for homeless families and day-care programs and supported group accommodation for people with intellectual disabilities.

“Chrisco is a generous donor to good causes in this area,” said Snr Constable Nicolle.

“Chrisco is delighted to be supporting the fantastic work of Wesley Mission,” said Chrisco CEO, Terry Seremetis. “Giving back to the community that supports us is an important part of the Chrisco business philosophy.

“We’re thrilled that our donation of whitegoods, household appliances, toys and manchester will help Wesley Mission to assist these people in developing the skills they need to live as independently as possible.”

Tracey Gleeson, Manager of Wesley Disability Services, received Chrisco’s bounty with deep gratitude. “To get so much, and all of it new, puts us so far ahead in caring for people who have so little, and it works wonders for creating an environment that lifts morale in people who have taken a battering in life,” she said.

Chrisco, operating in Australia, New Zealand and Canada, ships hampers of customer-selected goods for Christmas or other occasions, using quality products and a convenient and responsible payment system that avoids the risk of punting on credit.

Officers Nicolle and Gaglianio have spearheaded fund-raising efforts totalling about $100,000 in Auburn that have established the “Bluey Room” for children with cancer at Westmead Hospital helped other needy people. Chrisco has donated handsomely to the Bluey Room supported by Auburn Police at the cancer unit of the Westmead Children’s Hospital, and the company also sponsors the Auburn Crime Prevention Unit’s vehicle.
