Good Friday 2007: Sydney city centre will stage re-enactment of Jesus' crucifixion walk
05 April 2007
A public procession featuring a re-enactment of the crucifixion walk of Jesus Christ will bring the drama of His Passion to Sydney streets tomorrow, Good Friday, 6 April, 2007.
Organised and performed by students from Wesley Mission’s Wesley Institute, the procession will begin at Martin Place Amphitheatre at 2.00 pm and then travel along Pitt Street, ending at Wesley Theatre (220 Pitt Street) at 2.30 pm. Media are advised to assemble at Martin Place Amphitheatre no later than 1.50 pm.
The performance features a poem recitation at Martin Place before Jesus, carrying a wooden cross on his back, begins the fateful journey to his execution. Accompanied by sombre music the procession includes actors playing the jeering crowd, representing those who supported the crucifixion of Jesus.
The trial of Jesus is told through narration and movement. The procession moves from Martin Place, along Pitt Street and the Pitt Street Mall to Wesley Mission Theatre, C2 Level, 220 Pitt Street, where there will be a performance of the Easter play – Jesus Passed Over…
This unusual and thought-provoking show uses the device of a ‘play within a play’ to unravel the story of Easter. We, the audience, are drawn into the magical theatre world where we discover a group of misfit artists - a ballerina, a TV soap star, a wanna-be rock star, a cellist and a theatre critic – who are attempting to create an Easter play.
As their rehearsal develops the characters realise there is more to their mysterious director than first anticipated and we, the audience, realise that there is more to Easter than first assumed. As their director says, "you have to find the part that matters".
The cast of 10 actors are joined by 13 dancers and over 70 members of the Wesley Institute choir to bring this powerful Easter story to life.
Later at 6 pm the Rev Keith Garner will preach at the Good Friday Evening Service, “The Praise of the Unlikely…A Soldier.” He will speak about how a spiritual response to Christ can come from an unexpected source: the Roman soldier who was among those who helped put Jesus to death.
