Wesley Mission's Work for the Dole participants feed Abermain and Weston's flood victims
22 June 2007
Participants from a Wesley Mission-run Work for the Dole scheme are cooking emergency meals for approximately 50 people each day from the Abermain and Weston areas that have been devastated by the recent floods.
Meals have been provided for the last two weeks, but the demand is ongoing and there is an urgent need for more ingredients.
The ‘Feeding the Needy’ activity, joint sponsored by Wesley Uniting Employment and Auswide Projects and located at the Rectory of St Mary’s Anglican Church in Weston, has five to six participants each day cooking meals such as savoury mince and sausage casseroles that can easily be re-heated.
All of the Wesley Mission clients involved have contributed more than their designated hours in giving this much needed help to their local community. The team’s effort has benefited many busy families who have been attempting to try and clean up homes, but still have nowhere to sleep or eat.
Other local organisations have pulled together to assist the activity with cash donations or provisions. Barkuma Aboriginal Service, Kurri Kurri Recondition White Goods, Kurri Kurri Community Centre, Kurri Contractors, Kurri Kurri Bi-Lo and the Abermain Hotel are a few of those who have all lent a hand in helping local victims.
“It is wonderful to see the Work for the Dole participants using their new skills and responding with this level of service provision,” said Wesley Uniting Employment Regional Manager, Chris England. “It is also inspiring to see how well many organisations in our community will rally together to assist our residents in this time of great need.”
Wesley Mission is urging anyone who can to donate ingredients for the casseroles such as onions, potatoes, carrots, sausages and mince.
Donations can be left with:
