Wesley Mission Easter events 2008

19 March 2008

Wesley Mission will host a series of powerful Easter events, services and re-enactments over Holy Week this year.

Good Friday, 21 March

On the street:

  • Good Friday Passion Procession through Sydney CBD: 2:00 – 2:30 pm Beginning at Martin Place to Wesley Centre, 220 Pitt Street
  • Performance of Nobel Prize winner Dario Fo’s exciting work, The Passion Plays Wesley Theatre, 220 Pitt Street: 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm

In a medieval carnival atmosphere, dancers, musicians and street performers will draw in a crowd and perform the trial of Jesus. A vivid picture of that historical moment will be drawn. Jesus is sentenced, he takes up his cross, and at 2:08 pm the procession starts through, ending at Wesley Centre.

The actors, from Wesley Institute, then file into the Wesley Theatre and begin a performance of The Passion Plays from Mistero Buffo (The Comic Mysteries) by Dario Fo, Nobel Prize Winner for Literature 1997.

Fo’s famous Comic Mysteries explores several of the most sacred evangelical themes through a novel lens. We see the miracles, tribulations and agonies of Christ’s life uncensored. Moments of cruelty become agonisingly real as the nails pierce his body, moments of irony hit home when a Jester flirts with the Grim Reaper, and inspired revelation reminds us of God’s divine purpose when Mary sees her son’s death in an image. This play will enthral and entertain you, and ultimately bring you to the passion of the cross.
