The Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) is a pre-service teaching qualification that integrates Christian faith and worldview with academic learning and teaching practice.

Accredited with the NSW Department of Education and Training, the Graduate Diploma provides the approved fourth year preservice teacher education for teacher registration with the NSW Institute of Teachers.

Duration

Three semesters which can be fast tracked in one year full time or the course can be taken over 18 months or in two or three years part time.

On Campus Requirement

A compulsory four day orientation is run at the beginning of the course, normally at the end of January. This orientation includes workshops, tutorials, introduction to the semester’s units plus a child protection workshop. The orientation also familiarises students with the online delivery system (WI Online) and the student portal.

Mode of Study

The course is delivered via distance education. Students receive their course materials on CD and also have access to WI online which provides access to resources, discussion forums, staff and student information, calendar dates, and a digital drop box for assignments which are submitted electronically. Tutors are in regular contact with students to answer questions on the study material and provide feedback on assignments.

Entry Requirements

Candidates should hold a university undergraduate degree and before applying for admission, applicants should check with the teacher registration authorities in their own State or Territory to establish the suitability of their undergraduate studies for secondary teaching. NSW applicants should check they have covered an acceptable program in their undergraduate degree in their areas of specialisation with the NSW Institute of Teachers website at http://www.nswteachers.nsw.edu.au/Teaching-in-NSW.html.

2 Pedagogical Studies

• Psychology for Teachers
• Teaching students with Diverse Abilities

3 Curriculum Methods
(one method covering two units I & II is compulsory and candidates are encouraged to take a second teaching method covering two additional  units I & II).

• Science I & II
• English I & II
• History I & II
• Commerce/Business Studies
• Geography I & II
• Studies of Religion I & II
• Music I & II
• Drama I & II
• Dance I & II
• French I & II

4 Field Experience

• Field Experience, I, II, III (50 days in total)

The field experience (practicum) is normally undertaken in schools in the area in which the pre-service teacher lives.

FEE-HELP is available.

FEE-HELP (FEE Higher Education Loan Programme) is a loan facility for eligible students (ie, an Australian citizen or those who hold a permanent humanitarian visa) enrolled in fee-paying, postgraduate non-research courses.

FEE-HELP is similar to the deferred payment arrangements allowed to undergraduate students through HECS-HELP. It enables eligible students to apply for a loan from the Commonwealth Government to cover part or all of their tuition fees, and to defer repayment of the loan (CPI linked) until their income reaches the minimum payment threshold. The main difference is that the course fees the loan covers are not set within ranges stipulated by the government, but are each institution's discretion.
