How it started

Lifeline was founded in 1963 by former Wesley Mission CEO and Superintendent, Rev Alan Walker, who pioneered Australia’s first telephone suicide prevention service, and in March 2023, we'll celebrate its 60th anniversary.

How it’s going

Today Wesley Mission continues to operate the landmark Lifeline Sydney & Sutherland crisis support centre as part of the Lifeline Australia National Suicide Prevention Service.
Answering over 40,000 calls from Australians in crisis every year, we rely on the continued support of our dedicated volunteer Crisis Supporters to achieve our visions of an Australia free from suicide.

“The second call I ever answered for Lifeline Sydney & Sutherland was from a young girl who was in the process of ending her life. I believe she was saved that day because someone was there to help her when she needed it the most.”
