Treatment for eating disorders

Eating disorders are estimated to affect 9% of all Australians. Evidence shows the sooner anyone starts treatment for an eating disorder, the shorter the recovery process.

Anorexia treatment

‘Anorexia Nervosa’ is an eating disorder characterised by low body weight and body image distortion, with an obsessive fear of gaining weight which manifests itself through depriving the body of food.

Symptoms of anorexia can include:

  • intense fear of weight gain
  • restriction of food intake
  • being significantly underweight
  • excessive exercise
  • distorted image of own body weight and shape.

Bulimia treatment

‘Bulimia Nervosa’ is a type of eating disorder characterised by recurrent binge-eating episodes (eating abnormally large amounts of food in a relatively short period of time), followed by compensatory behaviour, such as purging (vomiting) or over-exercising.

Symptoms of bulimia include:

  • intense fear of weight gain
  • distorted image of own body weight and shape
  • binge-eating episodes and forced vomiting
  • excessive exercise
  • diet pill and laxative use.

Wesley Hospital Ashfield features a specialised clinic, the Wesley Eating Disorders Centre, which offers an integrated approach to treatment of these eating disorders, and a high staff-patient ratio.

Treatment usually begins with an inpatient program. During your stay, you will receive support through a high level of supervision and an intensive group program. Unlike some other programs, our clinicians have the flexibility to tailor treatment to the group’s needs. The length of stay varies because each person is at a different stage of their eating disorder, and has a different level of motivation to recover.

At the right stage in your recovery, you can continue with treatment in our day patient program. Attendance is initially five days a week with a gradual step down to three days and then one day.
