Have your say - homelessness

Help people leave homelessness for good by helping us secure more housing

Did you know, right now, nearly 50,000 people are desperately waiting for a safe and secure home? Sadly, people can wait up to 10 years in Sydney and five to 10 years in regional New South Wales areas to access basic accommodation from the NSW Housing Register 1.

Homelessness continues to be an urgent and growing concern. The total number of Australians who are facing homelessness has now increased to over 116,000 every night 2. Lack of affordable housing, rental affordability and housing stress are some of the reasons people experience homelessness.

At Wesley Mission, we take a ‘Housing First’ approach to help people leave homelessness behind for good. Without the constant worry of where they’ll sleep that night, a home provides people with the opportunity to heal from emotional trauma and gain skills to find work. Having access to a reliable shower and to cooking and laundry facilities, is also vital to self-care, better health, social connections and job opportunities. By meeting this urgent need, and providing wraparound support services, we give people the stability they need get back on their feet.

To mark Homelessness Week (1-7 August), we’re highlighting how great the need is for more safe and secure housing. Due to increasing mortgage interest rates and rental housing prices, along with price rises in groceries, petrol and cost of living, more people are finding themselves on the edge of homelessness.

So, we’re asking you speak out to help people most in need access safe and stable housing. Sign our declaration, which will form part of our advocacy work to help secure more housing for people experiencing homelessness within New South Wales. By having your say, which will be shared with government decision makers, you can help bring about change.
