Growing in Faith

Serving in faith

Serving in faith

Serving others, particularly those who find themselves on the margins of society, is a vital expression of our faith. We are engaged in a “Word and deed” ministry, with a strong commitment to both sharing the Word of Jesus Christ and serving others. We are grounded in a belief that every life matters and that faith, by itself, without works, is not true faith.

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if people claim to have faith but have no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, "Go in peace; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead … As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead."  James 2:14–23 TNIV

Christmas toys and hampers

While Christmas is a wonderful time of joy, for those who are struggling with financial hardship it can be a very difficult and distressing time. At Christmas time our congregation members seek to share God’s love and care by purchasing and distributing toys to children whose parents are struggling financially. We are also privileged to partner with corporate organisations who provide hampers filled with Christmas treats which we distribute to brighten up Christmas celebrations for those in need.

Wesley Fair

Every month our congregation members run stalls at the Wesley Centre in Sydney to raise funds for Wesley Mission’s programs to assist the most vulnerable in our communities. On the first Thursday in November volunteers from the broader community join our congregation members in serving at our annual Wesley Fair. The annual Wesley Fair is a large event where visitors can pick up wonderful homemade treats, homeware items, plants, clothing, books and CDs at bargain prices. All the proceeds from the fair are donated to Wesley Mission’s community service programs.

Our chaplaincy

As an organisation built on Christian faith, we aim to care for every aspect of people’s needs including their spiritual and emotional health. Our Chaplains play a vital role in providing emotional and spiritual care to Wesley Mission’s staff, community and commercial services.

Across our organisation we provide pastoral care to people from all walks of life—those who are homeless, people with disabilities, older people, broken families and those struggling with mental illness. Wherever there is a need, our Chaplains journey with people, offering emotional support during times of pain, struggle or grief as well as celebration in times of joy. Our Chaplains can be found providing spiritual and emotional support to people in supported accommodation, mental health hospitals, retirement villages, their homes, foster care facilities and in the workplace. In addition to the care provided to individuals, our Chaplains also conduct worship and funeral services, as well Bible studies and devotions.

We are developing a new field-based approach to chaplaincy to come alongside our community services. This approach incorporates a significant volunteer chaplaincy component. Our professional Chaplains will continue to provide direct spiritual care to staff and clients, but will also build, equip and nurture communities of volunteer Chaplains who will take part in this vital ‘coming alongside’ ministry.
