Brianna was just five years old when she and her little brother Aiden had to leave their parents’ house to live with their grandmother, Denise. Brianna knew that she often felt scared at home and that her parents yelled at each other a lot, but couldn’t know that this was because her parents were struggling with addictions to alcohol and the drug ice.

When Brianna asked her grandma why she didn’t see her mum and dad any more, all Denise could do was hug her and say, “Grandma will always be here for you and will always love you.”

Life was tough for this little family. Though Brianna and her brother were safe now in Denise’s loving care, they had seen and heard things that no child ever should and their behaviour was out of control as a result. This was especially difficult for Denise to manage, as she had never expected to become a full time parent again as a single woman in her fifties.

Brianna knew that her family were poor. She only had one school uniform, which Denise washed every night. Brianna stopped asking for treats, even at Christmas, and it broke Denise’s heart to hear Brianna tell her little brother, “You know we can’t do that because we have no money.”

Every single day was a struggle. Brianna’s behaviour became so bad she was threatened with suspension from Kindergarten. Denise had been forced to give up her job to care for her grandchildren full time, and she was isolated, exhausted and in despair.

“I was at the end of my tether when I found Wesley Mission. I was truly in crisis. But Wesley Mission understood my situation and gave me real, immediate, practical help,” Denise said.

Brianna is seeing a Wesley Mission counsellor, helping her to overcome the traumas of her past. Denise is taking Aiden to a playgroup at Wesley Family Centre, where they are both making friends. Home is a much calmer place for the whole family now. Denise completed Wesley Mission’s parenting course, and has learned to manage Brianna and Aiden’s behaviour with positive strategies. Brianna’s behaviour improved so much that she even won an award at school for her good manners.

Helping families in crisis

Life has improved so much for the family that Denise was finally able to give Brianna and Aiden a special treat – their first pet. Brianna and her brother love helping their grandma take care of their budgie, and laugh when Denise jokes, “it’s the only thing louder than you two!”

“Without Wesley Mission, I honestly don’t know what I would have done. We were in crisis. Brianna and Aiden used to have no boundaries, but they respect me now. We’re all so much happier,” Denise said.

With your help, we can reach out to more children like Brianna and their families this Christmas and give them the practical help and caring support they need to take the first steps towards a better life.
