Origins

For young people living in out of home care, contemplating the future can be unsettling and challenging without the support structures often available to their more advantaged peers.

Wesley Take Charge of Your Life was developed in partnership with The Rotary Club of Sydney to fill a gap that currently exists to assist these young people transition successfully from living in out of home care to living independently by providing them with the right support, and helping them to develop the skills and confidence they need to make this major change in their life.

Through this program, current and former clients of Wesley Mission aged 15 to 25 years who are about to leave or have left Wesley Out of Home Care can access services such as mentoring, further education, accommodation support, employment opportunities and assistance with managing life issues, substance abuse and developing life skills such as managing finances. In this way, they can truly ‘Take Charge of Their Life’ and work towards a happy and rewarding future.

Wesley Take Charge of Your Life is a 12 pilot program that will be fully funded so these young people can participate in the program at no cost to them.

Fast facts

Currently, there is a clear gap in Australia in the support and services available to young people when they’re transitioning from living in out of home care to living independently. Generally for many young people exiting out of home care, their transition to adulthood is often abrupt and they are expected to negotiate accommodation and training pathways themselves without the support of an adult role model. As a result, they fare more poorly than other young people their age in the general population.

Wesley Mission outcomes are far better than the national averages, however the fact remains that leaving care is a gap that requires investment. Our service model provides excellent support for children and young people up to the age of 18. The Wesley Take Charge of Your Life pilot program will allow us to build on and maintain relationships with young people post 18 and introduce them to individually identified supports that will help them to develop the skills and confidence they need to make the successful transition to adulthood.

Commitment to care

Wesley Mission has been providing security, support and genuine care to children in need since we opened our first home for abandoned children in 1893: Waverley House in Woolloomooloo.

Since then, we have been committed to providing safe, loving homes for children through the work of Wesley Dalmar. From our early group homes and orphanages right through to the out of home care agency that Wesley Dalmar is today, our vision has always been to reach out to those children who are most in need.

Over the years Wesley Mission’s work with families and children has expanded, and we have pioneered a broad range of services to help them, whatever their circumstances. This includes a variety of guidance and mentoring programs to help young people reach their potential, and connecting with them through a range of support services in the areas of substance abuse, employment, life issues and accommodation.

Wesley Mission is dedicated to providing holistic care for young people including providing them with the life skills they need to transition successfully from living in out of home care to living independently.
