Our treatment programs to help with eating disorders

Wesley Hospital Ashfield Eating Disorders Program Summary Diagram

Our hospital in Ashfield features a specialised centre, the Wesley Eating Disorders Centre, which offers an integrated approach to treatment and a high staff-patient ratio.

Treatment usually begins with an inpatient program. During your stay, you will receive support through a high level of supervision and an intensive group program. Unlike some other programs, our clinicians have the flexibility to tailor treatment to the group’s needs. The length of stay varies because each person is at a different stage of their eating disorder, and has a different level of motivation to recover.

At the right stage in your recovery, you can continue with treatment in our day patient program. Attendance is initially five days a week with a gradual step down to three days and then one day.

Our caring staff members will work with you during the admission process to work out the best treatment plan for you.

As part of our treatment programs:

  • medical consequences are assessed and stabilised
  • healthy eating patterns are established
  • skills are taught to cope with unhelpful thoughts, behaviours and emotions
  • co-existing illnesses such as depression or anxiety are assessed and treated
  • the patient gradually learns to eat in settings that are part of their normal life
  • family and other supports are encouraged in the recovery.
  • In this video, Wesley Hospital Ashfield’s Director of Wesley Eating Disorders Centre, Professor Phillipa Hay, explains the facts about eating disorders in an information evening presentation.
