Our treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) commonly requires flexible and holistic treatment tailored to meet a range of psychiatric issues, such as depression or substance use. One of our caring staff members will work with you during admission to determine the best treatment plan for you.

Our hospital facilities in Ashfield and Kogarah offer two types of treatment programs that are designed to treat PTSD:

  1. inpatient care
  2. day patient programs, designed to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Inpatient treatment involves staying in the hospital for a period of time to receive focused 24-hour care. This may be the best treatment for you if you also have another disorder, such as severe depression, as a consequence of PTSD.

Once these other disorders are stabilised in an inpatient setting, therapy can continue in a day patient program.

Treatment through our day patient program involves attending short sessions. The number of sessions you would attend depends on the program and your personal needs. There are three day patient programs that PTSD day patients will commonly attend. They are our group programs for:

  • depression
  • anxiety management
  • anger management.

The programs are run using cognitive behavioural therapy techniques, facilitated by a multi-disciplinary team led by a clinical psychologist. Cognitive behaviour therapy is a collaborative group process, encouraging you to participate in group discussions and practise new techniques between sessions.

About our depression day program

Our 12-day group program is conducted two days a week over a six week period. The program focuses on:

  • the nature and causes of depression and how various lifestyle factors contribute to depression
  • changing behaviour, such as increasing your activity levels and improving sleep patterns
  • cognitive therapy strategies to assist in identifying and managing negative thought patterns
  • conflict resolution.

About our anxiety management day program

Our 12-day group program is conducted two days a week over a six week period. The program teaches practical ways to manage anxiety including:

  • understanding anxiety and its relation to trauma
  • targeting the symptoms of anxiety
  • understanding the role of lifestyle, sleep and exposure in managing anxiety
  • introducing cognitive therapy strategies to assist in the identification and management of thoughts.

About our anger management day program

Our anger management group program helps you cope with stress when anger is excessive and disproportionate. The program shows how anger can be expressed appropriately by looking at:

  • the nature of anger and its relationship to trauma
  • the role of avoidance and exposure to the triggers that provoke anger
  • strategies to help manage the arousal of anger
  • lifestyle factors that contribute to feelings of anger developing and being maintained
  • cognitive therapy strategies designed to identify and modify the thinking that leads to anger
  • communication skills and assertiveness
  • ways to identify early warning signs.

One of our caring staff members will work with you during admission to determine the best treatment plan for you.
