Suicide prevention—Wesley LifeForce networks

Wesley LifeForce has established suicide prevention networks in a wide variety of community settings throughout Australia, from urban centres to remote Aboriginal communities.

A network or coalition is a union of people and organisations, a voluntary collaboration working together to influence outcomes of a specific problem. A suicide prevention network, addressing the specific needs of a local area, is one of the most effective ways of raising community awareness of the issue of suicide at the same time as empowering its members to develop appropriate suicide prevention strategies at a grassroots level.

The second principle underpinning the Living is For Everyone (LiFE) framework, a project of Australian Government Department of Health, indicates that ‘Suicide prevention is a shared responsibility across the community including families and friends, professional groups, government and non-government agencies.’

By bringing together key members of the community with a passionate interest in suicide prevention, Wesley LifeForce supports community members to take ownership of the issue and work towards real solutions to address the problem of suicide in their region.

Wesley LifeForce networks are coordinated nationally and align to best practice standards. Utilising the networks methodology, endorsed by the Australian Institute of Suicide Research and Prevention (AISRAP), potential network locations are identified in areas where there is a high rate and/or high incidence of suicide.

Wesley LifeForce gratefully acknowledges the funding provided by the Australian Government.

Wesley LifeForce Community Hub

The Wesley LifeForce Community Hub is an online resource centre that has been developed to assist our suicide prevention networks to operate effectively and to learn from each other. It is available to all Wesley LifeForce member and affiliate networks.

Information Day

Each year Wesley LifeForce hosts a conference for network members from across the country.  The aim is to share ideas and to help the networks build a stronger presence in their community. The day includes presentations by leading academics in the suicide prevention and mental health fields, workshops and a showcase of suicide prevention projects undertaken by the networks. Participants are provided with the latest evidence based suicide prevention resources and best practice guidelines to help them develop their networks into effective suicide prevention ‘hubs’ within their communities.
