For two decades Wesley Mission volunteers in the Newcastle region have been befriending older people in the community through the Wesley Community Visitors Scheme. This national program, funded by the Australian Government, has been running for 21 years and, for most of that time, Wesley Mission has been a provider of the program.
The Wesley Community Visitors Scheme in Newcastle was originally delivered by Newcastle City Mission and then came into the Wesley Mission family when Newcastle City Mission merged with Wesley Mission in 1999.
Throughout its 20 years of service, the Wesley Community Visitors Scheme has had just three Program Coordinators: a testimony to the commitment and dedication of those who deliver this valuable program. Over this time the program has expanded and is currently funded for more than 100 Volunteers.
There are also a number of long-term Volunteers of the program who have been with the program for more than 15 years.
The Wesley Community Visitors Scheme is delivered by various organisations and agencies throughout Australia and there are currently more than 150 programs being delivered nationally.
