Expanding our care in clinical mental health services
As part of Wesley Mission’s strategic plan to increase services and provide more specialist support where need is greatest, we have undertaken a review of our clinical facilities and propose to redevelop Wesley Hospital Kogarah.
At present, Wesley Hospital Kogarah is a 30-bed private mental health facility providing inpatient and day-patient programs in general psychiatry, mood disorders and specialist treatment for alcohol and other drugs. The facility currently operates at capacity and clinical staff include a number of doctors who are renowned as the best in the Southern Hemisphere in their field.
The proposed redevelopment would provide additional capacity, in two stages, to more than double the available beds. A state-of-the-art facility would also create opportunities for medical research and education, contributing to the vision of Kogarah as a Health, Innovation and Education Precinct as outlined by the Greater Sydney Commission.
“Mental illness is a growing challenge in our communities and across Australia. We want to ensure the dignity of each individual and bridge the gap in services so that more people can access the specialist treatment they need,” said Wesley Mission CEO, the Rev Keith V Garner AM.
“As the proposal progresses we look forward to engaging with local community and key stakeholders as we seek to meet the growing demand for mental health services in southern Sydney.”
Have your say
From 20 July to 10 August, we asked staff and the community to provide feedback about the redevelopment via an online engagement platform.
The community consultation period has now ended. Your feedback will be collated and will help inform the future plans for the hospital.
