Giving carers a break

4 May 2014 Wesley Impact! TV

This week on Wesley Impact! TV we meet Wesley Mission's Maria Maxwell and the Rev Dr Keith Garner explores 1 Peter.

Maria's story
Maria Maxwell is Wesley Mission's General Manager of Child, Family and Disability Services. She joins the Rev Dr Keith Garner on the show today to talk about the 'whole of life' approach Wesley Mission takes to support people with disability and their families. Maria explains how supporting people with disability also involves empowering them and helping them live as independently as possible. There is also a great need to provide respite support for families, enabling carers of people with disability to get the break they need. Maria shares some of the insights from Wesley Mission's latest research, which looks at the issues and challenges that carers of people with disability face.

Wesley Mission storyWesley Disability Services
At Wesley Mission we do all we can to ensure that people with disability are valued, accepted and empowered to live meaningful and productive lives in the community. We also have a responsibility to look after their carers too. Stuart and Alison Simpson face the difficult task of looking after two children with disability. Wesley Mission provides much needed support and respite for their family whose children require constant care. This week we take a look at Part 1 of their story. Part 2 of their journey will air next week.

Keith's reflection
The Rev Dr Keith Garner explores the salvation gift in the second of a series from the book of 1 Peter. We live our life in difficult circumstances and for many people, life is tough. God's promise is that he deals justly and fairly with all of us. Our gratitude is to God who has given us the gift of salvation, no matter who we are and what we face.

Guest performers
Today on the show we welcome Australian band Sons of Korah, who are devoted to giving a fresh voice to the biblical psalms. With their unique acoustic, multi-ethnic sound, Sons of Korah have given this biblical songbook a dynamic and emotive new musical expression. We also welcome gifted Australian performer Ann-Maree Keefe to the show. Ann-Maree is an acclaimed song writer, writing prolifically over the years to amass a large body of work including her solo material, worship songs for the wider church and even kids songs.
