When Kam returned to Sydney from Hong Kong after caring for his unwell parents, he found himself searching for a church community. After a few months searching, Kam asked friends across Asia to help him find a church in Sydney. That’s when someone connected him with Wesley Mission.
When Kam first walked into Wesley International Congregation, he slipped quietly into the back row. An introvert and unsure where he fit, he still felt a pull to serve. That same afternoon, he searched ‘Wesley Mission volunteer’ on Google, clicked the first link he saw and landed on Wesley Connect. He didn’t even know what Wesley Connect was, but he enquired anyway. Within days, someone reached out. And just like that, he was part of the team.
“Google brought me here,” he says with a smile. “Actually… God brought me here.”
Kam didn’t choose an easy ministry. Wesley Connect exists at the heart of the Sydney CBD, walking alongside people facing homelessness, trauma, hardship and deep loneliness. But Kam wasn’t looking for comfort. He was looking for purpose.
Week after week, he shows up at Wesley Connect. He listens. He sits with people in their pain. He can’t fix every problem – and he knows that – but he can be present. And that presence matters.
Kam knows what it feels like to be alone. Years ago, in Beijing, he experienced homelessness for a short time. It was frightening and surreal, yet even then he says God sent “angels” to lift him back up. Looking back, he can see it clearly now: God was with him.
That’s why Wesley Connect matters so deeply to him. When he walks into that room and sees people talking, laughing, checking in on each other, he sees the kind of community he once needed – one where no one has to face the dark alone. No matter how heavy life becomes, it’s that community, together with God’s steady, unshakeable presence, that carries people through.
“God wants everyone to know they’re not alone. We might not be able to fix everything, but we will be there with you,” Kam says.
“No matter your situation, God is with you and he’s got your back, so you can feel confident and safe.”
And that’s the message he hopes every person who walks into Wesley Connect will one day believe: You are not alone. God is with you. And we will walk with you too.
