Celebrating a successful EXPO

Wesley Mission’s Opportunity Pathways EXPO was a fantastic event held in winter for the Wyong community.

An array of guest speakers shared their experiences to inspire Wesley Mission’s Opportunity Pathways participants in their own vocational journey.

EMT41688 Article 5 500×333 2Around 20 participants attended with their Employment Coaches, along with another 10 or so students from Wesley Vocational Institute (RTO Code 90091).

Local businesses and employment providers were also present at the event to connect with attendees, including representatives from Wesley ParentsNext, Work Rehab, Max Employment, Uni4You and Clean N Care.

A particular highlight from the day was Laura and Daniel’s presentation from Hearts & Minds.
Laura grew up in Ireland, where she had an extremely challenging childhood. She had two pregnancies in her teens and was with an abusive partner until she sought refuge at a women’s shelter. There Laura had the space to recover and upskill to become financially independent. She trained as a hairdresser and moved to Australia with her kids to be safe from her abusive ex-partner.

Laura’s since married Daniel and together they run Hearts & Minds barber emporium. Many people escaping abusive relationships experience ongoing trauma – and for Laura it’s the same. She generously shared some of the daily rituals that help her manage the anxiety she experiences, such as cold showers and breathing exercises.

Many participants and attendees found Laura and Daniel’s presentation very inspiring and motivating to persist through life’s various challenges to pursue our vocational goals.

Belinda, a rehabilitation consultant from Work Rehab, shared about the range of services available to our participants to help them get back into the workforce.

In a Q&A session with Chloe from Clean N Care, Chloe shared her experiences as a home care worker and spoke about the growing employment opportunities to support older people on the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Wesley Mission’s Opportunity Pathways would like to thank all presenters, organisers, attendees, program participants and Employment Coaches for coming along to make the EXPO a successful event.
