Last month, the decision was made to postpone the usual July NAIDOC week celebrations until the 8th – 15th November. With substantial uncertainty regarding the safety of in-person events this month, it was agreed by the National NAIDOC Committee (NNC) that the protection of elders and those in our communities with chronic health issues from the disastrous impacts of COVID19 was the highest priority.
NAIDOC week exists to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Wesley Mission’s Opportunity Pathways and Disability Employment Services teams often work closely with First Nations communities and are very supportive of the celebrations.
Although the July dates may be locally acknowledged, physical gatherings will be impacted by various State and Territory COVID-19 restrictions.
More news regarding the National NAIDOC Awards and the reactivation of the 2020 NAIDOC Local Grants Round will be made within coming weeks.
