Gabrielle’s story: a home filled with laughter and friendship

They say laughter is the best medicine. And for Gabrielle, a resident at Wesley Mission’s Alan Walker Village, laughter has been good for her soul.Known for spreading joy within her village community by telling a joke or two with the residents and staff, for Gabrielle, laughter is one of her keys to living well.

But it’s not just laughter. For Gabrielle, it’s her close friendship with her village neighbour, Elwyn that’s been essential to her wellbeing. And while there’s a 19-year age gap between them, Gabrielle says, “[It] doesn’t matter because we get along like a house on fire.”

And indeed, they do. Whether entertaining their village neighbours on the piano together or dressing in elaborate costumes at village social gatherings, it’s safe to say Gabrielle and Elwyn are joined at the hip.

Along with the friendships she’s made while living at Alan Walker Village for the last 16 years, Gabrielle says the staff have enriched the latter years of her life. “Since day one, the staff have been wonderful to me,” Gabrielle says.

And she truly means it. Turning to Fiona, Alan Walker Village Care and Education Coordinator, Gabrielle says, “I will say, Fiona, you are my friend first, staff second.”

Annaretta's story

Annareta builds a full life in retirement

Before Annareta moved to Wesley Mission’s Alan Walker Village, she felt lost. After her husband of 56 years suddenly passed away, the months that followed were challenging.

“My brain was filled to the limit of everything that was happening,Annareta says.

But now Annareta is flying. And she owes it all to the team at Alan Walker Village and Jason, our retirement Village’s Lead Clinician.

“In just two visits with Jason, I was right back to myself. It was so nice knowing I could meet with a psychologist that I didn’t have to pay for,” she says.

A new fulfilling chapter

Right before her husband passed, Annareta began enquiring at retirement living villages in preparation for her next season. Annareta says she’ll always remember that first phone call with Camryn, Alan Walker Village’s Sales & Guest Relations Coordinator.

“She was so welcoming, and it wasn’t a rushed conversation. I just knew she was listening to what I was saying and was very sympathetic.

After her husband passed, Annareta visited The Sydney Retirement Village Expo at The Epping Club and was pleasantly surprised to see Camryn.

“We hugged the first time I saw her. We talked and the next thing I knew, an appointment was made. And I came and they showed me the Village,” Annareta says.

From Bible study to mindfulness classes, Annareta now lives a full life at Alan Walker Village.

“I love where I live. My calendar’s always full. It’s all here, in-house.”

But most of all, it’s the people Annareta says who make this place feel like home.

“I find all the residents are lovely. It’s like a family. I love that this is an organisation that really cares for people. There’s just a beautiful feeling here that you know that you matter.”

Karen’s story: Helping mum find the perfect home

Karen’s mother, Joy, had lived on her own for many years. But when New South Wales went into lockdown, it became very difficult for Karen to visit Joy, leaving her constantly worried about her mum’s health and safety.

Karen knew it was time to find a place that met all her mum’s needs. When Karen suggested to her mum about moving into independent living, Joy was hesitant.

But one visit to Alan Walker Village changed all that.

With its fresh modern units and the convenience of having help on hand, Karen was very impressed to find the perfect home.

“She’s got her own space and her two-bedroom apartment which is very nicely furnished,” Karen says. “And it’s just 10 minutes away for me to visit her!”

Karen is thrilled to have her mum live close by, knowing that she can enjoy her independent retirement in supportive and connected community.

“We know the move to Alan Walker [Village] was the right decision. Life can be so short, and I feel blessed to have this gift of time with my mum.”
