What is Supported Independent Living under the NDIS?

Supported Independent Living is a core part of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) that aims to support individuals with disability to live more autonomously.

SIL services concentrate on assisting you with daily living tasks to enable you to manage your household and daily routines effectively.

Importantly, SIL is designed to complement housing needs rather than provide the actual accommodation. You can choose to live independently or in shared housing arrangements, and the support is tailored based on your individual circumstances.

Supported independent living NDIS services cater to a variety of needs, making sure you receive the right level of support to help you thrive.

The difference between SIL & SDA

A frequently asked question surrounding supported Independent Living (SIL) is the distinction between SIL and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA).

While SIL focuses on providing support for daily living and skill-building, SDA refers specifically to the housing arrangement itself, accommodating individuals with high physical support needs or complex disability. If you’re seeking further information about this, we provide resources and support to clarify any questions about our services.

Our experienced SIL support workers in Sydney

One of the most disruptive things in disability support is when things dont work out with a provider.  Whether due to the provider or individual support workers, we know starting over is incredibly disruptive.

At Wesley Mission, our support workers in Sydney stay. That consistency means the people supporting you genuinely know you: your routines, your preferences, your communication style, and what a good day looks like.

Our Sydney SIL homes maintain a dedicated team structure built around each tenant. Workers are trained to handle complex needs and provide behaviour support where required - so families and referrers can trust that people with high-needs are supported with the skill, stability and continuity they deserve.

You'll always know what's happening and we believe families are partners, not bystanders. From day-to-day updates to care plan reviews, our SIL support workers in Sydney keep communication open, consistent and proactive - giving everyone real peace of mind that you're in capable, caring hands.

FAQs

FAQs

Who is eligible for Supported Independent Living?

SIL is designed for NDIS participants who need regular or high levels of support to live independently. Eligibility is assessed by the NDIA and is based on your disability-related support needs, your goals around independent living, and your current living situation.

Generally, SIL is suited to people who need ongoing daily support that goes beyond what informal supports (family, carers) can provide. A support coordinator or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) can help you determine whether SIL is the right fit.

How is SIL funded in an NDIS plan?
SIL is one of the more complex NDIS funding categories. Unlike most NDIS supports, SIL funding is not self-managed or plan-managed — it is managed by the NDIA directly and paid to your registered SIL provider. The amount funded is based on a detailed assessment of your support needs, including overnight and 24/7 support if required. Your provider typically prepares a SIL roster of care that documents the hours and type of support needed, which the NDIA then reviews and approves.
What does a typical day look like with SIL support?
SIL support is built around your routine and goals, so no two days look the same. Support workers can assist with waking routines, personal hygiene, preparing meals, taking medication, getting to appointments or community activities, and winding down at night. The focus is on supporting you to do as much as you can independently, while being there when you need a hand. Over time, the goal is to build your skills and confidence so the level of support needed may reduce.
