We get it. The world of disability services can feel big and confusing. But things have changed for the better! Today, you have more choice and control than ever before.
It's a system built on teamwork. The government sets the rules. For purpose organisations like Wesley Mission bring the support to life right here in your community.
Let's break down how it all works. Wesley Mission offers disability services in Sydney and throughout many parts of NSW, and we're here to help you navigate this system.
How the NDIS changed everything
At the heart of Australia’s disability services support is the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). It launched in 2013 and changed everything.
Before the NDIS, support was often "one-size-fits-all." The NDIS changed that.
Think of it as your personal plan. It gives you funding. You choose the support and services that are right for you. You choose services that help you reach your goals. This puts you in charge. From help with daily life to therapies that build your skills.
The scheme is run by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). It has already helped over half a million Australians live more independent lives.
Building a fairer future
The government is always working to make the system better.
Big national plans, like Australia’s Disability Strategy, are pushing for real change. They are promises to build a more inclusive country. A country where people with a disability can find good jobs. Join in with their community. Access places and services easily.
It's about making sure everyone has the chance to take part in every part of life.

How NDIS funding works
The NDIS is the main way disability services get funded in Australia. Your plan is based on your unique needs and what you want to achieve.
The funds cover three main areas:
- Core supports: For your everyday needs, like help around the house or getting out in the community.
- Capacity building supports: To help you learn new skills and grow your independence.
- Capital supports: For bigger items like special equipment or changes to your home.
There are also other programs, like Disability Employment Services (DES). These offer expert help for people with a disability to find and keep a job.

Challenges we face together
We know the system isn't perfect.
