Valuing community at Easter
No one desires to journey this life alone. As Easter approaches, here at Wesley Mission, we know the benefits of being part of a community throughout this holiday season. Our desire is to come alongside people who are seeking connection and community throughout Easter.
Why is community a value for us? Because of the compassion Jesus Christ showed us when He walked this earth. He sacrificially gave His life on the cross so we could be connected back to Him and have a personal relationship with Him. We too desire to share this compassion with others and ultimately, provide a place where people can belong.
The importance of community
When we look at the origins of the word ‘compassion’, we see a deeper meaning when the word is split into two: ‘com’ and ‘passion’. The origin of ‘passion’ comes from the Latin word ‘pati’ which means ‘suffering’. The prefix ‘com’ also originates from Latin and means ‘with’, ‘together’, ‘in association’ and ‘jointly’.
At Easter we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, who sacrificed His life on a cross and then rose again three days later. Jesus chose to suffer a painful death on the cross in order to restore our relationship with God so that we can always be together with Him.
And in the life of Jesus on earth we see His deep desire to come alongside humanity. Jesus knew the benefits of community and being ‘together’ with people.
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved,” Acts 2:42-47.
Being connected with others is essential in life. At Wesley Mission, we daily practice this principle of gathering community. We’re inspired by the example of Christian believers more than 2000 years ago who gathered as a community and showed compassion to one another. So we daily choose to walk alongside individuals and families through both good and tough times. And we desire to connect with others in ways that help them realise they’re not alone.
Celebrate Easter with us
You’re invited to gather with the Wesley Mission family this Easter as we remember and thank God for His deep love for us by sending His son Jesus to earth in the ultimate act of compassion. There will never be a greater example of compassion and love than what Jesus did for us on the cross.
We invite you to celebrate Jesus’ compassion for us by joining us at our many Easter events starting on Palm Sunday right through to Easter Sunday.
